Wilderness day trip

Experience unique sub-alpine wetlands, rain forest and panoramic vistas of Taranaki.
This trek caters for a group of up to 10 people and is suitable for inbound tour groups, tramping clubs, school and family trips.

What you can look forward to

You'll enter the Egmont National Park at the end of Mangorei Road, in the Taranaki pasture land not far from the city of New Plymouth.

Although the lower reaches of the track can be a little muddy you'll climb steadily through rain forest and soon reach sub-alpine terrain. As you break out onto the tussock land of the Pouakai Plateau, the view can be stunning.

You'll arrive at the 16 bunk Pouakai Hut in time for lunch. The panorama spreads from the Tasman sea to the west to great views down over Ahukawakawa Swamp to Mount Taranaki.  On a fine day dramatic images can be captured on camera at the Pouakai Tarns a worthwhile stroll from the hut.

Who will carry the equipment?

There are two options:

  1. You carry a full kit, clothes, food and cooking equipment
  2. We can supply support staff to carry some of your gear

Do you need transport?

If you require transport from New Plymouth our guide can pick you up from the city.
